Future Continuous

The Future Continuous is used to talk about an action which will be in progress at a specified time in the future. The tense is constructed by adding 'will be' to the verb present participle (gerund).

  • I will be waiting for you at six o'clock.

  • He will be eating by the time you arrive.

Useage

If the future continuous tense is the correct tense to use, it should be possible to replace it with the expression 'will be in the process of...'  or 'will be in the middle of...'. If this is not possible, you should consider using the present simple tense instead. The future continuous indicates that an action will be continuing at a time in the future, while the simple future suggests that the action will be complete. Consider these sentences:

  • I will be finishing my homework at 10:00.
This sentence suggests that I may finish my homework at 10:05 or 10:15. In any case, at 10.00 I will be in the process of completion.

  • I will finish my homework at 10:00.
This sentence suggests that I will finish at 10:00 exactly.
